In the late 1990s, professional wrestling in America was
at the peak of its popularity with Nitro and Raw duking it out during
The Monday
Night Wars and then there was ECW who were different from The WWE and
WCW where there were extreme hardcore matches, raunchy angles, etc.
The
worst day for me as a wrestling fan came when WCW died in 2001 because
of the key players in Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, and Vince Russo that had a
hand in killing WCW. One of the main issues why WWE has lost so many
fans over the past decade is not only because of too many filler
matches, promos, and segments with bad storylines and 50/50 booking, but
also the lack of a true competitor that will push WWE to make changes
to its product like WCW did in the late 1990s.
Here are top 5 WCW superstars that were buried by The WWE
1.
Goldberg - I was a real big fan of Goldberg when he was in his prime
back during The Nitro Era where he was basically booked back then
similar to how Roman Reigns is booked today: The Superman that overcame
all odds and come out on top. But when Goldberg signed with WWE in 2003,
he made a memorable debut in Raw spearing Hollywood Rock and then going
on to defeating him at Backlash which started his push for four months
until the second elimination chamber match that happened at Summerslam
where he literally destroyed Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, and Randy
Orton until he was buried by The WWE when they let their then-backstage
politicial golden boy Triple H beat him by hitting him with the
sledgehammer and getting the win. Goldberg's first run with the WWE
wasn't as successful as his second run was last year as he was inducted
into this year's WWE Hall Of Fame.
2.
Sting - Sting is undoubtedly one of the greatest wrestlers to have ever
stepped foot inside of a wrestling ring as he wrestled mostly as a face
throughout his wrestling career beating up bad guys either random or
turned on him like Ric Flair, Lex Luger, and many others have done. I
remember first watching him when was Wolfpac Sting during the peak of
The Nitro Era in 1998 and then I saw him change to his crow gimmick
coming from the rafters with a long black leather jacket with his
signature black baseball bat. He also had a decent run in TNA (now known
as Impact Wrestling), but when he decided to sign with WWE several
years ago, I remember not being a fan of that decision because I
remember thinking, "They're gonna bury him" and sure enough they did by
putting the final nail in the coffin of WCW at WM31. He would officially
retire from wrestling and he was also inducted into The 2015 WWE Hall
Of Fame.
3. Booker T -
Booker T had such a successful decorated career in WCW winning The World
Heavyweight Championship 5 times, The WCW Tag Team Title with his real
life brother Stevie Ray 10 times, The WCW World Television Title 6
times, The WCW US Champion 1 time, and The 9th WCW Triple Crown
Champion. But the first of numerous burials that happened in his WWE
career happened during the infamous "Invasion" angle in 2001 where he
was not only buried by certain WWE wrestlers in promos, but his WCW
career was buried when he lost the World Heavyweight Title at Summerslam
of that year. Then in 2003, he had gotten over with the fans and was
thrown into one of the most controversial storylines in WWE history that
resulted in Triple H burying him during promos using racially
insensitive remarks like "You're just a nappy headed entertainer who
entertains people" and "guys like you don't deserve to be World
Champion" and then at Wrestlemania XIX, just when Booker T had the match
won, WWE buried him again by putting their then-backstage political
golden boy Triple H over him and this would keep him stuck on the
mid-card for several years until he was drafted to Smackdown where he
became World Champion and then he left WWE in October 2007 because of
how badly his character was booked via constantly burying him and then
he did much better in TNA and eventually came back to WWE and was
inducted into The 2013 WWE Hall Of Fame.
4.
Diamond Dallas Page - He was one of the most popular and successful
stars that WCW had especially during its peak years in the late 1990s
where he won The World Heavyweight Championship three times, The WCW US
Title two times, The WCW World Tag Team Titles four times, and WCW World
Television Title one time and The fourth WCW Triple Crown Champion.
When he was in the WWE, he was thrown into a very horrible storyline
where he was portayed as a "stalker" that was stalking Undertaker's
then-wife Sara and then ended up getting beaten by The Undertaker which
immediately resulted in him being buried by The WWE.
5.
Buff Bagwell - Buff Bagwell had a pretty decent run as a mid-carder
during WCW's peak years in the late 1990s where he won The WCW World Tag
Team Title 5 times and when he got to WWE in 2001, it was quite obvious
that Buff Bagwell was also gonna be buried by The WWE as evidenced in
his poor showing against Booker T that not onlt killed any chance of a
"WCW revival", but also killed his career in WWE.
The
Conclusion - I definitely miss WCW because they had better storylines
and a better product during its peak years in the late 1990s unlike thus
garbage WWE product today that has alienated and turned away many fans
and viewers.

I wouldn't put Buff Bagwell in that list. He was a mediocre midcarder that had no business being in the WWE let alone in the main event of a WWE show. The only reason he was in that spot was because he gave Meekmahan a boner over his physique.
ReplyDeleteThe person that should be in the list is Vader. He was a monster in WCW winning the WCW world title and had great matches with Sting, Ric Flair, and Cactus Jack before being released in 1995 due to a spat with Paul Orndorff. His time in WWE was just terrible as I don't remember much of what he did other than attacking Gorilla Monsoon and then being jobbed out by Shawn Michaels.
