Trigun is one of the most famous series to ever exist. The manga ran from 1996-2008 with the 26 episode anime premiered and ended in 1998. While, not as popular in Japan, the anime became a huge hit in America probably due to it being western themed. The creator Yasuhiro Nightow would then later pen the hit series Kekkai Sensen, also known as Blood Blockade Battlefront.
As I said, in America people love Trigun but more so with the anime. Not many people have read or even finished the manga which is far superior to the anime. I like the anime, I really do but its not that great. It wasn't until I finished the Manga that I went back to watch the anime fully for the first time. I was not impressed. IT was produced by Madhouse, the same company that bought us Hunter x Hunter 2011, Hajime No Ippo and the first season of OnePunch Man. Releasing in '98, it has some smooth old timely animation that fits well with western gunslinger theme. The pacing was fair but the story was never flushed out. The Anime is almost a gag as it follows Vash The Stampede running around with Milly and Meryl trying to collect the bounty on his head. Occasionally Wolfwood would tag along, usually by mistake, helping Vash stop some notorious villains.
There is no effective plot as the characters throttles along until the series ends at 26 episodes. It did have its moments as we see that no matter how much a a ruthless villain Vash is painted to be, he never once kills or harms others unlike Wolfwood. There are heartbreaking moments that helps the characters develop but it all sort of goes to waste in the end. I did enjoy watching the series as Vash is a lot more comical in the Anime compared to the Manga. Seeing him be a goofy character and not worry so much about the future. The Anime is solid, its enjoyable but it has its minor flaws.
The Manga continues the story two years after the anime or the original manga ends. The manga was originally published in Shonen Captain in '96 but was shut down after only three volumes were published. Nightow later moved to Young King Ours as a continuation under the name Trigun Maximum. The art is pretty cool. The characters have such unique facial and body features but also their attire is true to their character. Although placed in a time with limited resources, the clothing for the main characters ad the villains are pretty cool.
In Maximum the characters are flushed out to their fullest as we see Wolfwood and Vash team up to stop the Gung Ho Guns, assassins hired by Vash's brother to keep an eye on him but eventually want his head. Wolfwood even has his own character arc that is grabs you by the neck and never lets go until the end. I found myself emotionally distraught. Not only was his arc great but so is the entire manga. A more serious tone is set as its a rush to save the world from Knives. Vash loses everything in his quest to save all of humanity. Seeing such a great character go through so much pain and heartbreak will also break you in the end. Standing at 14 volumes, the Trigun Maximum is a roller coaster ride of tremendous story and fights. The build up to the final fights in the series was worth the wait as not only the story, but the characters plots finally came to a close.
I highly encourage you to read the manga if you haven't. It truly is an amazing story that deserves your attention. You will not be disappointed with it and will find a new appreciation for the series like I, and so many others did.

Thank you for this review. I read Trigun and it is a Masterpiece! Knives his identity crisis, Wolfwood his character arc, the cold moments, everything was perfect for me. Its nearly impossible to make a better manga than trigun.
